So you’ve finished the final draft of that manuscript you’ve been toiling away on. Congratulations! You’ve hit an important milestone, but the work’s not done yet. It still takes quite a bit to get a manuscript across the finish line and produce a finished book. But you don’t need to do it alone.
A book-length manuscript is a long and complex piece of writing. Even the most careful and conscientious writer is going to have some mistakes slip in during the writing process—simple typos, incorrect word use, awkward phrasing, formatting mistakes, and plot holes, among others. And while a thorough self-edit will catch some of those mistakes, it is a universal truth that we can all become a bit blind to issues in our own writing. Once you’ve reached the point where you’ve found all the mistakes you can, it’s time to bring in some outside eyes to find the mistakes you can’t.
This is where I come in. My name is Jeff Rudolph, and I’m a copyeditor and proofreader specializing in history, fantasy, and historical fiction, although I have also worked on books in many other genres. As a copyeditor, it’s my job to help you get the language in your manuscript into its best possible form—correcting grammar and spelling, improving word choice, and generally working to polish up the phrasing to maximize clarity. When acting as a proofreader, I serve as a final set of eyes after all other editing has been done to catch any lingering errors that may have slipped through the cracks. The goal is to help you produce a manuscript that is error-free, says exactly what you want it to say, and says it in the best possible way.
